European hornet, the largest wasp in Europe, found in Norway for the first time in 95 years

In the summer of 2007 the species European hornet (Vespa crabro) was found in the municipality of Eidskog in south-east Norway. Later the same year the species was also found in the municipality of Trøgstad. These are the first observations of the species in Norway since 1911. It is likely that the species is about to re-establish in Norway, maybe because of a warmer climate due to climate changes. The closest habitats for European hornet are in south-east Sweden. In the 2006 Norwegian Red List the European hornet is categorised as Regionally extinct (RE).
