New Fungi Species Discovered in Bøverdalen, South of Norway

In August 2007 a new fungi species of the genus Lycoperdon was found in Bøverdalen, a mountain valley in the municipality of Lom, in south Norway. DNA sequencing shows that the species has not yet been formally described.

Undescribed Species - Lycoperdon sp.
Several individuals of the new Lycoperdon species were discovered in the locality. Later, DNA sequencing showed that the species belongs to the Lycoperdon molle-group.  However the species is genetically different from other species in this group. It also differs from related species in morphology. It is rather big, and tends to grow in clusters. Since it is not yet formally described the species has no yet been given a scientific name. So far this species is not known to occur other places in the world.

A New Species in Norway - Disciseda bovista
In the same area was also discovered Disciseda bovista (Klotzsch) Henn, a species not previously found in Norway. This is a central and east European species, normally growing in step like pastures. In Scandinavia it is formerly found only on a few localities in Denmark and South Sweden.

The locality where the new species was found is well known for a rich diversity of plants due to high levels of chalk in the ground. Altogether 30 red listed species have been found in the area.
